The Miami Metropolitan Area, officially the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area, is the most populous metropolitan area in the U.S. state of Florida, encompassing three main counties in South Florida extending from Palm Beach County in the north to Miami-Dade County in the south, with Broward County in between the two. The city of Miami serves as its core, while Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach serve as anchors of their respective counties. The contiguous urban area is 1,244.18 square miles (3,222.4 km2), whereas the remainder mostly consists of the Everglades and surrounding wetlands. With an estimated population of over 6.3 million, its population exceeds 31 of the nation's 50 states and is the eighth-largest in the country, the fifth largest in the Southern United States and the largest in the Southeastern United States. With 1,279.2 mi2 (3,313 km2) of urban landmass, the Miami metropolitan area also is one of the world's most populous urban agglomerations.
