Led by third-year head coach Eric Morris, the Mean Green played their home games at the DATCU Stadium, located in Denton, Texas. On November 16, the Mean Green were ranked in the AP Poll for the first time since 1959, ending the longest drought for an FBS team. Additionally, on December 2, North Texas was ranked by the College Football Playoff selection committee for the first time. They played the New Mexico Bowl as a ranked team for the first time in school history and defeated San Diego State.
